CAPOEIRA
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that brings together rhythm, music, acrobatics, and self-defense. It was once a way for enslaved people to fight for their freedom – today, it’s a powerful practice that connects movement, strength, and expression.
During the aulas (Portuguese for “capoeira classes”), you’ll dive into the rich history of capoeira, learn flowing movements that help you dodge and move with ease, discover how to release your power through kicks, and feel the energy of songs that are at the heart of this practice. You’ll also get to know the folklore of Bahia through the Dança dos Orixás – the dance of the gods. Guided by the rhythm of traditional instruments, you’ll experience what it means to play capoeira – a dance-like game between two people full of energy, awareness, and connection.
The workshops are open to everyone – no matter your experience or fitness level. Capoeira is for every body, and everyone can find their own way into it.
LIMA i PÉTALA
LIMA (Gosia)
Graduate of the Alternative Theatre Academy – a unique program in experimental and physical theater. Since 2014, she’s been leading the capoeira workshop series Força das Mulheres (“The Strength of Women”), which led her to create a foundation supporting women’s empowerment.
Lima believes capoeira can transform people – it’s a tool for expression and a lesson in how to be with others. With years of practice and deep listening, she helps people grow in their own rhythm. She sees beauty in everyone and knows how to bring it to the surface. For her, capoeira is not just a martial art – it’s a world where you can find yourself. Her love for traditional Brazilian songs helps her go deeper and stay connected to the wisdom of those who came before us.
Pétala has been practicing capoeira for over 20 years. Her experience working with kids and adults means she knows how to make even the trickiest moves feel natural. She teaches through play and fun, and her singing and storytelling through movement will move you deeply.
For her, capoeira is a way of life. A recent trip to Brazil confirmed that she’s exactly where she’s meant to be. Like the wind led by the goddess Iansã, she brings energy and fire. She’s the spark that lights up the space and inspires others to move. Her presence is full of openness, joy, and love for people and the world.
